What Not to Do After Botox and Lip Filler Injections

One of the most common questions we receive after treatment is, “What should I avoid afterward?” While Botox and lip filler treatments require little downtime, following proper aftercare instructions can help minimize swelling and bruising while supporting the best possible results.

Whether you're new to aesthetic treatments or a seasoned patient, understanding what not to do after your appointment is just as important as the treatment itself.

Botox Aftercare: What to Avoid

Botox works by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles. After treatment, the product needs time to bind to the intended muscles, which is why certain activities should be avoided immediately afterward.

Avoid Rubbing or Massaging the Treated Area

For the first 24 hours, avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying significant pressure to the treated areas. This helps prevent unwanted migration of the product.

Skip Intense Exercise for 24 Hours

Strenuous workouts increase blood flow and may increase swelling or bruising. We recommend waiting until the following day before returning to vigorous exercise.

Avoid Excessive Heat

Saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and hot yoga should be avoided for at least 24 hours after treatment. Excessive heat can increase inflammation and contribute to swelling.

Postpone Facial Treatments

Facials, facial massage, laser treatments, and other procedures that manipulate the skin should generally be postponed for 1–2 weeks following treatment.

Be Mindful of Headwear

Tight hats, helmets, or headbands that place pressure on treated areas should be avoided immediately after treatment.

Filler Aftercare: What to Avoid

Filler treatments often involve temporary swelling, tenderness, and bruising. Following aftercare instructions helps ensure a smooth healing process.

Do Not Massage the Area Unless Directed

It is normal to feel firmness or unevenness during the healing process. Avoid massaging or manipulating the lips unless specifically instructed by your provider.

Avoid Intense Exercise and Excessive Heat

For the first 24–48 hours, avoid strenuous workouts, hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms. Increased circulation may worsen swelling during the initial healing phase.

Delay Dental Work and Vaccinations

When possible, schedule dental procedures and vaccinations at least two weeks before or after filler treatment. These events can stimulate inflammation and may increase the risk of complications.

Avoid Additional Facial Treatments

Facials, microneedling, laser procedures, and facial massage should generally be postponed for approximately two weeks after filler treatment unless cleared by your provider.

What Is Normal After Treatment?

After Botox:

  • Small injection site bumps for several minutes to a few hours

  • Mild redness

  • Minor bruising

  • Gradual onset of results over 14–21 days

After Filler:

  • Swelling, especially during the first 24–72 hours

  • Tenderness

  • Mild bruising

  • Temporary asymmetry while swelling resolves

Remember that healed results—not day one results—are what matter most. Lip filler can take up to two weeks to fully settle, while Botox reaches its final effect around 14–21 days after treatment.

When Should You Contact Your Provider?

While serious complications are uncommon, contact your provider immediately if you experience:

  • Significant worsening pain

  • Skin discoloration or blanching

  • Signs of infection

  • Vision changes

  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
